Reading: The Neglected Skill

Reading is our most important learning skill! Yet it is one of the most neglected skills. No one practices reading in the same sense as practicing the piano or golf. Yet everyone should. Tremendous gains can be made in the reading skill with regular practice of the right kind.
The "Reading Problem" in America is a national disgrace. Reports indicate that in some schools as much as 50% or more of the high school students read at or below the 5th grade level; 29% of entering college students cannot read well enough to do college work; 45% of the freshman class in a large university have to take remedial English; and surveys indicate that the average reading level of adults in the U.S. is at the the 6th grade level.
A Gallup Poll showed that 56% of all American adults never completed reading a sinle book after their formal education was completed.
